Hunter Irrigation Rotors

Hunter Sprinklers — Gear Drive Rotors for Every Application

Hunter sprinklers are trusted by homeowners, landscapers, and irrigation professionals for consistent, even coverage season after season. As one of Australia’s largest authorised stockists of Hunter Industries products — with over 30 years of industry experience — we stock the full range and ship Australia-wide every business day.

What is a Gear Drive Rotor Sprinkler?

A gear drive rotor is a pop-up sprinkler head that rotates as it waters, covering a large area with a single head. Unlike fixed spray heads that spray in a set pattern, rotors sweep back and forth across the lawn, delivering water slowly and evenly. This slower application rate gives water time to soak into the soil rather than running off — making rotors far more water-efficient for medium to large lawn areas.

Hunter gear drive rotors use a water-lubricated internal gear mechanism, which means no oil, no corrosion, and a significantly longer service life than older impact-style sprinklers.

Which Hunter Sprinkler Do You Need?

Hunter PGP Ultra — The Industry Standard

The Hunter PGP Ultra is one of the most popular and proven rotor sprinklers in the world. With a coverage radius of 7.3 to 14.3 metres and arc adjustment from 50° to 360°, the PGP Ultra suits the vast majority of Australian residential lawns and garden areas. It features convenient through-the-top arc adjustment so you can fine-tune coverage without digging up the head, and comes with a full nozzle rack for flexible flow selection.

  • Best for: Medium to large home lawns, sports turf, parks, and general landscaping
  • Inlet: 20mm BSP (3/4″)
  • Radius: 7.3m – 14.3m
  • Arc: 50° – 360° adjustable

Hunter PGJ — Compact Rotor for Smaller Areas

The Hunter PGJ is the compact rotor in the Hunter range, designed for smaller lawn areas and garden beds where a full-size rotor would be overkill. With a radius of 4.3 to 7.3 metres it fits neatly in the gap between spray heads and larger rotors, giving you precise coverage without overspray onto driveways or paths.

  • Best for: Small to medium home lawns, garden borders, tight spaces
  • Inlet: 15mm BSP (1/2″)
  • Radius: 4.3m – 7.3m
  • Arc: 40° – 360° adjustable

Hunter I-20 Ultra — Professional Grade Performance

The Hunter I-20 Ultra steps up to professional-grade construction with a heavy-duty stainless steel shaft built for high-use applications. Where the PGP Ultra is ideal for residential use, the I-20 is the rotor of choice for sports fields, council parks, school grounds, and commercial landscapes that run irrigation daily. It delivers superior torque drive for consistent rotation even under variable water pressure.

  • Best for: Commercial landscaping, sports fields, high-use turf, councils
  • Inlet: 20mm BSP (3/4″)
  • Radius: 7.3m – 14.3m
  • Arc: 50° – 360° adjustable

Hunter I-25 — Heavy Duty Large Area Coverage

The Hunter I-25 is Hunter’s heavy-duty rotor for large turf and commercial applications requiring maximum coverage. With a radius reaching up to 21.6 metres, the I-25 significantly reduces the number of heads required to cover large open areas, keeping installation costs and water use down. Built with the same stainless steel internals as the I-20, it is engineered for permanent, high-demand installations.

  • Best for: Large commercial turf, golf courses, ovals, council parks, large estates
  • Inlet: 25mm BSP (1″)
  • Radius: 11.9m – 21.6m
  • Arc: 50° – 360° adjustable

Why Choose Hunter Rotors

Hunter Industries has been manufacturing professional irrigation equipment since 1981. Here is why irrigation professionals and homeowners across Australia choose Hunter rotors over other brands:

Water-lubricated gear drive: The internal gear mechanism is lubricated by the water flowing through it — no oil to leak or degrade and no maintenance required. This design is the key reason Hunter rotors last longer than competing brands.

Through-the-top adjustment: All Hunter rotors allow arc and radius adjustment from the top of the head using a simple tool — no need to dig up the head or interrupt your system.

Matched precipitation nozzles: Hunter’s colour-coded nozzle system ensures all heads in a zone apply water at the same rate regardless of arc setting, preventing overwatering in corners and underwatering on full-circle heads.

Check valve options: Hunter rotors are available with built-in check valves to prevent low-head drainage — a common cause of soggy patches at the base of slopes after the system shuts off.

Genuine Australian stock: All rotors we supply are genuine Hunter Industries products purchased through Australian distribution, backed by full manufacturer warranty.

Rotor Sprinklers vs Spray Heads — Which is Right for Your Lawn?

Choosing between rotors and spray heads depends mainly on the size of the area you need to water.

Spray heads suit small, irregular garden beds and lawn areas under about 5 metres. They apply water quickly at a high precipitation rate, which works well in short burst cycles on small areas.

Rotors suit larger open lawn areas from about 5 metres outward. Because rotors sweep and apply water slowly, they are far less prone to runoff and puddle formation on compacted or clay-heavy Australian soils. If you have ever seen water pooling on a lawn during a watering cycle, spray heads are almost certainly applying water faster than the soil can absorb it. Switching to rotors solves this immediately.

As a general rule — if your lawn is larger than 5 metres in any direction, rotors will give you better coverage, lower water bills, and less maintenance than spray heads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Hunter PGP Ultra and the I-20?

Both cover the same radius range, but the I-20 Ultra is built to a heavier commercial specification with a stainless steel riser shaft and stronger internal components. For a standard home lawn the PGP Ultra is the right choice. For sports fields, school grounds, or any application running daily irrigation, the I-20 is the better long-term investment.

How far apart should I space Hunter rotor sprinklers?

Rotors are designed for head-to-head coverage — each head should reach the next head in the layout. For the PGP Ultra at maximum radius, space heads approximately 12 to 14 metres apart in a triangular or square grid. Tighter spacing gives more even coverage; wider spacing creates dry spots.

Do Hunter rotor sprinklers work with Australian poly pipe?

Yes. All rotors in our range use standard BSP thread — 15mm BSP for the PGJ, 20mm BSP for the PGP Ultra and I-20, and 25mm BSP for the I-25. These are the standard sizes used throughout Australian irrigation systems and are fully compatible with standard threaded poly pipe fittings.

Can I mix rotor brands in the same zone?

We recommend against it. Different brands have different precipitation rates and pressure requirements. Mixing brands in the same zone results in uneven watering. Keeping to one brand in a zone guarantees matched precipitation and consistent performance.

Do Hunter rotor sprinklers have a check valve option?

Hunter rotors are available in standard and check valve versions. The check valve prevents water draining from the lowest head when the system shuts off — essential on sloped blocks. We stock both versions; check individual product listings for details.

What warranty do Hunter rotor sprinklers carry in Australia?

All Hunter Industries products we supply carry the full Hunter Industries manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. Full terms are set out in our warranty and returns policy.

How do I adjust the arc on a Hunter PGP Ultra?

With the head popped up, insert the Hunter adjustment tool into the slot on top of the head. Turn clockwise to decrease the arc, anti-clockwise to increase it. The arc range is 50° to 360° and only the right stop adjusts — the fixed left stop cannot be moved. Radius is adjusted using the small radius reduction screw on the nozzle.
